Experiential Learning Opportunities

Student and facutly working on stage building.

A learning-focused organization, the UBCFA is committed to student success. By employing students, providing internships, and supporting project-based activities, the CFA offers UB students countless opportunities to gain the hands-on experience they’ll need in the working world.

Students are essential to fulfilling the UBCFA mission. Whether working with our front-of-house team, production department, or main office, student employees and interns do valuable work. We are also aligned with the university’s initiative, the Here to Career student employment program. With a focus on eight career readiness competencies, Here to Career provides UB students with work experience that will set them apart in a highly competitive workforce.

Student Employment

Student employee positions are available throughout the UBCFA. Here, student employees can explore various paths while being guided by experts and gaining valuable experience for future careers in the arts and entertainment industry.

Opportunities are available in our administrative, event and ticket operations. Students also find employment in the CFA’s staging, lighting, sound and video production departments. Previous experience in the fields of theatre, live entertainment and/or related production industries is required for certain positions.

Projects

The UBCFA offers project-based learning opportunities across various disciplines. These unique experiences are designed to launch graduates' careers, build portfolios and strengthen entries into prestigious graduate programs.

Our Concert Production Intensive selects advanced production students to take on leadership roles and work directly with national artists and touring professionals. We also participate in fieldwork projects with students from UB’s Arts Management Program, as well as video production projects through the Department of Media Study’s UBFilms internship program.

Every year, the UBCFA team also engages with the university’s academic departments by participating in departmental projects, providing mentorship and serving as guest lecturers. Recently, we joined the production team for the UB’s Department of Theatre and Dance's 2019 Prague Quadrennial (PQ). PQ is a global showcase performance design, scenography, and theater architecture. In 2019, the UB Department of Theatre and Dance was selected by the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) as the U.S. entry.
