Dance Residency Outreach
In Step With Our Community…
The Center's Dance Residency Outreach Program
As Western New York's premier presenter of dance, the Center for the Arts places great emphasis on developing dance in our community as well as introducing children to professional dance.
Since 1997 the Center has conducted more than a dozen professional dance outreach projects to provide arts education for more than 23,000 students at schools primarily in the City of Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Western New York public school students have been afforded the opportunity to experience a live professional dance performance in their own auditoriums and gymnasiums by some of the world’s finest companies. In addition, University at Buffalo dance majors benefit from master classes with members of these professional dance companies when groups are in residence for several weeks each spring semester.
The Center has brought professional dance to more than two dozen public schools, many with repeat engagements, at absolutely no cost to the participating districts. Schools include: Buffalo Academy for the Performing Arts, Buffalo School #45, Tapestry Charter School (Buffalo), Grover Cleveland High School (Buffalo), Niagara Falls Senior High, Niagara Falls Middle School, Lackawanna Senior High, Tonawanda Senior High School, City Honors (Buffalo), Catholic Central Academy (Buffalo), Herman Badillo Bilingual Academy (Buffalo), Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet School (Buffalo School #39), Starpoint Middle School (Lockport), Niagara Wheatfield High School, Cheektowaga High School, St. Lawrence Academy (Buffalo School #86), Gowanda Elementary, and Aurora Middle School (Lancaster), among others.
This is a major commitment by the Center, both financially and in terms of personnel, but it is part of a focused, continuous effort to enhance the education of Western New York students. Public school students receive less access to dance than any other professional performing art; the Center strives to nurture interest, as well as develop future audiences for this dynamic, athletic, and beautiful method of expression.
