Back to Buffalo 2: The UB Dance All Star Concert

Drama Theatre

Saturday, September 25

8:00pm
$26.50, Students (any school) $13

Sponsored by the UB Alumni Association

The Center’s Dance Residency Outreach Program brings professional dance companies into area schools for workshops, demonstrations and performances. Since 1997, more than a dozen professional visiting artists have provided more than 20,000 students with free dance performances and workshops.

Additionally, the Dance Residency helps attract prospective students and affords UB dance majors the opportunity to take part in master classes with international professional artists. This program allows the Center to give back to the community while helping UB's Theatre & Dance Department provide its students with amazing experiences and connections in the performing arts.

After last year’s sold-out dance alumni concert event, we are pleased to announce Back To Buffalo 2, featuring another eclectic group of accomplished alumni. All proceeds from the performance will benefit the spring 2011 Taylor 2 residency.

Currently scheduled to perform:

Amanda Benzin (Jump Rhythm Jazz Project)

Katie Heintz (Houston Metropolitan Dance Company)

Claire Jacob-Zysman (Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company)

Jenny Laroche (Rockette – The Radio City Christmas Spectacular, television, film)

The company’s style is a fusion of the gesture and movement of modern dance, with the discipline and precise execution of a classical company.

Since 1985, Parsons Dance has toured to more than 235 cities, 30 countries, six continents and millions of audience members. They have been featured on PBS, Bravo, A&E, and the Discovery Channel, and even performed live in Times Square as part of the internationally broadcast, 24-hour Millennium New Year’s Eve celebration. The company has performed at the most prestigious theaters, festivals and presenters the world over.

“It does not take long to see why Parsons and his company are one of the hottest tickets in contemporary American dance. First, they are all terrific performers, energized, eager to please and rehearsed within an inch of their lives. Second…Parsons provides choreography that’s consistently intelligent, witty, well-crafted, and humane.”

The Balanchine Couple

In just over a decade, The Suzanne Farrell Ballet has evolved from an educational program of the Kennedy Center to a highly lauded ballet company, hailed by the New York Times’ Chief Dance Critic in 2007 as “one of the most courageous projects in ballet today.”

Throughout the nearly three decades of her performing career, Suzanne Farrell was the most influential American ballerina of the late 20th century, as well as the exquisite muse of George Balanchine, one of the undisputed masters of ballet. After retiring from the stage in 1989, she emerged as one of the world’s most inspiring ballet teachers and directors.

In this unique program, Ms. Farrell provides onstage narration, navigating the audience through the evolution of Balanchine's legendary pas de deux style. The program begins with the pas de deux from the early years of Apollo, La Sonnambula, Ivesiana, La Valse, and Agon and continues through to the "Farrell years" of Meditation, Don Quixote, and Diamonds. The program concludes with the grand pas de deux of Stars and Stripes.

In each of these selections, the focus is on the couple, dancing together in pas de deux. From the French, meaning ‘step for two,’ it is designed to show the virtuosity of the ballerina and her partner.

Following the performance, there will be a post show discussion lead by Suzanne Farrell
