Rapidly establishing itself as one of higher education’s most promising ensembles for cultivating young professional dancers, UB’s Zodiaque Dance Company in Concert springs into its 36th season. Both Zodiaque alumni and current company members can be seen gracing the covers and feature articles in such leading trade magazines as: Dance StudioLife, Dance Magazine, Dance Spirit Magazine and Dance Teacher Magazine.
This spring, the diversity of motion and innovative programming continues and will be captured by eight distinguished choreographers expanding the company’s eclectic repertoire. The concert will feature: the critically acclaimed and time-honored work Miserere, by celebrated Canadian choreographer David Earle; the sweeping energy of Jon Lehrer’s Iambus, the Artistic Director of LehrerDance; a hip-hop concert work by Teena Custer from Slippery Rock University; the enchanting music of Ravel’s Boléro choreographed by Zodiaque Artistic Director Tom Ralabate; alumni guest choreography by Lindsay Katherine Guarino from Salve Regina and Providence College; and new works by UB faculty members Melanie Aceto, Karen Georger, and Zodiaque’s Managing Director Tressa Gorman Crehan. Featured on Friday and Saturday evening, of the second concert weekend, will be a special guest performance by renowned movement analyst, choreographer, and teacher Bill Evans - celebrating his 70th birthday performance. Come and celebrate Bill’s 70th along with the diversity and motion of dance presented by Zodiaque Dance Company.

A Night Out epitomizes the early plays of the late, Nobel-Prize-winning British playwright Harold Pinter, with its dry humor, minimalist text, and extraordinary rhythms and musicality. We follow the young working class Albert throughout a single day and night, as he rebels against his family, his peers, and society. Pinter’s signature atmosphere of underlying tension and incipient violence permeates the play. Powerfully dramatic, the play presages his classic “comedies of menace," such as The Homecoming. Originally written in 1959, the play still delivers a strong theatrical impact.
Vincent O’Neill will direct the production. Vincent is Associate Professor and former Chair of the Department of Theatre & Dance, and has served as a faculty member for the past twenty years. He is a co-founder and Artistic Director of Buffalo's Irish Classical Theatre Company. Through his international work as an actor, mime artist and director, he has performed on tour in France, Germany, England, Russia, Japan, Australia, and Hong Kong. He has performed Joyicity, his one-man show on the life and works of James Joyce, off-Broadway and throughout the USA. He is President of the Theatre Alliance of Buffalo, which represents twenty professional theatre companies in Western New York, and he will receive the Artie Career Achievement Award in June 2010.
The sixteen-strong cast of A Night Out features Ryan Cupello, Shaina Greser, Genevieve Lerner, Amanda McDowall, Matthew Nerber, Shawn Smith, and R.J. Voltz in leading roles. Ranging from freshmen through seniors, the cast includes majors from across the department's programs, including students in the BA in Theatre, BFA in Theatre Performance, and BFA in Musical Theatre programs. Many UB Theatre students have become known to Buffalo audiences during their student years through their many appearances at Western New York theatres including Artpark, the Irish Classical Theatre Company, Musicalfare, and Shakespeare in Delaware Park.
